Holiday Packing Made Easy: What to Pack for a Stylish, Stress-Free Trip

Holiday packing can feel like one of those jobs that starts with good intentions and somehow ends with an overflowing suitcase, clothes all over the bedroom and the familiar thought…

“I’ve got nothing to wear!”

But the truth is, you probably have plenty to wear. The trick is packing the right things — pieces that work together, make you feel good and suit the holiday you’re actually going on.

Because looking stylish on holiday shouldn’t mean taking your entire wardrobe with you.

Start with your holiday, not your suitcase

Before you start pulling clothes out of the wardrobe, think about what you’ll actually be doing.

Are you relaxing by the pool? Exploring a city? Going out for lovely dinners? Walking along the beach? Or perhaps you have a mixture of everything?

Once you know what your days will look like, you can start creating outfits around them.

This is where a little planning can save you a lot of space.

Rather than thinking:

“I need 10 outfits.”

Think:

“How many different combinations can I create from the clothes I’m taking?”

A pair of trousers that works with a casual T-shirt during the day might look completely different with a pretty top and jewellery in the evening.

That’s clever packing.

Choose a colour palette

One of my favourite holiday packing tips is to choose a simple colour palette.

Pick two or three main colours that work beautifully together, then add a couple of accent colours if you wish.

For example:

White or cream

Navy or denim

Your favourite accent colour

A print that incorporates some of those colours

This means you can mix and match much more easily.

And if you’ve ever stood in front of your suitcase wondering why you packed six tops but none of them go with anything, this is probably the reason!

Think outfits, not individual pieces.

Pack the clothes you actually enjoy wearing

This might sound obvious, but it’s surprisingly easy to pack the clothes we think we should wear on holiday rather than the clothes we genuinely feel comfortable and confident in.

If you never wear something at home because it doesn’t quite feel like you, chances are you’re not suddenly going to love it on holiday.

Your holiday wardrobe should make you feel comfortable, confident and like yourself.

So don't save your favourite pieces for "just in case".

If you feel fabulous in something, pack it!

Don't forget the third piece

One of my favourite styling tricks is adding a third piece to an outfit.

It could be:

A lightweight shirt

A kimono

A cardigan

A linen jacket

A beautiful scarf

A lightweight layer

These pieces can completely change an outfit without taking up much room in your suitcase.

A simple vest top and trousers can feel very casual during the day, then add a statement necklace and lightweight jacket and suddenly you have an outfit ready for dinner.

Small changes can make a big difference.

Shoes: keep them simple

Shoes are one of the quickest ways to fill a suitcase.

Before packing every pair you own, think about what you genuinely need.

For most holidays, you can probably get away with:

One comfortable pair for walking

One everyday pair

One dressier option

And, of course, your favourite sandals or flip-flops if you're heading somewhere warm.

Try to choose shoes that work with several outfits rather than packing a different pair for every occasion.

Your feet — and your suitcase — will thank you!

Accessories are your holiday wardrobe secret weapon

Accessories take up very little space but can completely transform an outfit.

A few carefully chosen pieces can give you lots of different looks.

Think:

Statement earrings

A colourful necklace

A beautiful scarf

Sunglasses

A belt

A fabulous handbag

You can wear the same simple dress more than once and make it feel completely different simply by changing your accessories.

And let's be honest, accessories are much easier to squeeze into your suitcase than another pair of trousers!

Don't pack for your fantasy self

This is a big one.

We've all done it.

You pack the dress that you're definitely going to wear for cocktails, the uncomfortable shoes that will definitely be fine this time and the outfit that is slightly too fitted but you're definitely going to feel confident in by Friday.

Then you arrive, reach for the same comfortable outfit you've worn a hundred times and wonder why you packed half your wardrobe.

Pack for the real you.

The you who is going on this particular holiday.

The you who wants to enjoy herself, feel comfortable and not spend the whole day worrying about whether her clothes are digging in, riding up or needing constant adjustment.

Give yourself a little holiday outfit plan

Before everything goes into the suitcase, lay your clothes out and create a few complete outfits.

Take a quick photo of each one on your phone.

That way, when you're away, you don't have to stand in front of your suitcase every morning trying to work out what goes with what.

You can simply look at your photos and choose.

Easy!

It also helps you spot whether you've packed too much of one thing and not enough of another.

And finally… don't forget how you want to feel

For me, personal style isn't about following rules or looking like someone else.

It's about understanding what works for you.

So when you're packing for your next holiday, don't ask yourself:

“What should I wear?”

Instead ask:

“What do I want to feel like when I'm wearing it?”

Confident?

Relaxed?

Feminine?

Effortless?

Stylish?

Comfortable?

Choose clothes that give you that feeling.

Because the best holiday wardrobe isn't the one with the most clothes.

It's the one where you open your suitcase and think:

“I love everything in here.”

And then you can close the suitcase, forget about your clothes and get on with enjoying your holiday.

After all, isn't that what holidays are really for?

Happy packing — and happy holidays! 💕
